The personal information we collect as part of this survey will be processed in accordance with the applicable data protection legislation. It will be used solely for the purpose of the research. The legal basis for processing your personal data in this survey is consent.
Nest Insight is running the surveys as part of a research project jointly led by Nest Insight and researchers at Harvard University in the USA. The purpose of the survey is to better understand how people in the UK manage their money and gain a better insight into their financial wellbeing. Therefore, within the survey there are questions about your household and thoughts around different financial topics.
Nest Insight will share the anonymised survey data with researchers at Harvard University so that they can analyse the data. Nest Insight is part of Nest Corporation who is the independent controller with respect to your personal data collected for the surveys, and as such will determine how your personal data is used in the survey. Harvard University and Nest Corporation are joint controllers with regard to the data used for the research project.
Type of data
We will collect data about you, your Payroll Reference Number, your personal and household circumstances (including some financial information) and your attitudes and behaviours around money management. In some instances, you may be asked to provide an email address to allow us to conduct follow-up surveys during the project. Email addresses will not be shared or transferred from Nest and will be deleted after 18 months.
As part of the research project, your survey results will be matched with other data that you have provided to your employer, SUEZ, and the credit union, TransaveUK (as applicable). The purpose of this is to gain a better understanding of the financial decisions people in the UK make. Your personal survey responses will not be shared with SUEZ or TransaveUK.
Transfer outside of the United Kingdom
Nest Insight and researchers at Harvard University are working together on this project. This requires Nest Insight to transfer survey data to researchers at Harvard University in the USA. However, as the data will be anonymised it will not be possible for Harvard to identify individuals. As such the information shared with researchers at Harvard does not fall within the definition of personal data as set out in the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
- Do I have to take part in the survey?
You do not have to complete this survey. You can ask questions about our survey before deciding whether or not to participate by emailing insight.research@nestcorporation.org.uk.
If you do agree to participate, you may withdraw yourself from the study at any time, without giving a reason, by advising Nest Insight via email to insight.research@nestcorporation.org.uk. You will only be able to withdraw your data if you provide your Payroll Reference Number in the survey as this is the only way for the researchers to identify your data. If you withdraw yourself from the study, your data in relation to the survey will be deleted and/or anonymised, as soon as reasonably practical, usually within one week.
If you withdraw your consent, please note that data that has been processed before the date of withdrawal will still have been legally processed and will be unaffected by the withdrawal. The withdrawal will also not affect anonymised data as it is not possible to identify your data.
2. Are there any risks and benefits in taking part?
The possible risks of completing this survey are minimal. We take the necessary steps to ensure compliance with Data Protection legislation and to protect your survey responses. You will receive no direct benefits from completing this survey. However, your responses may help us learn more about how people manage their money.
3. What happens to the data provided?
The information you provide as part of the study is the research data. Any research data from which you can be identified, for example your Payroll Reference Number, is known as personal data or information (PI).
Nest Insight will minimise our use of personal data by only collecting the data we need for the research. Any personal data we collect will be anonymised before it is shared with Harvard University researchers in the USA. This means that any directly personally identifying data will be removed. Harvard will not be able to identify you. The original survey data will be stored securely by Nest Insight.
The personal data processed for the purpose of this research project will only be stored for as long as is necessary to complete the research analysis and publish the findings (including the replication of the results by Harvard following the identification of a potential analytical or methodological error in the results as published), and in any event for no longer than ten years following the collection of the data. After this, any personal data will be deleted.
4. Will the research be published?
The research teams are committed to sharing this research for the benefit of society and the economy. The anonymised research findings will be written up as a series of articles, research reports and presentations, whether by Nest Insight, its funders (if any), or its collaborators, such as researchers at Harvard University. Anonymised research results will also be openly accessible on the Nest Insight website and shared on social media.
5. Who has reviewed this study?
This research was approved by the Harvard University Area Institutional Review Board (IRB) on Friday 5 November 2021. If you have questions or concerns about the research, you may contact the Harvard study team at shberk@g.harvard.edu. You may also contact the IRB directly at cuhs@harvard.edu regarding protocol IRB21-1088.
6. Who do I contact if I have a concern about the survey or I wish to complain?
